Strengthening exchange and cooperation in distance open education and promoting sustained development of training and education of farmers

From August 27 to 28, 2014, the 2014 Sino-American Open Distance Education Workshop was held in Beijing, which was jointly hosted by CABTS (Education and Training Center of Farmers in Science and Technology of MOA), ADEC and OSU. Professor David King, President of ADEC, Dr. Scott Reader, Director of Agricultural Technology Extension Center of OSU, Ms. Xie Li, Deputy Director General of the Department of Adult Education and Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education, Ms. Liu Yan, Deputy Director General of the Department of Science, Technology and Education of MOA and Mr. Liu Tianjin, Executive Vice President of CABTS attended the workshop. Over 21 officials, experts and scholars from member institutions and universities of ADEC, as well as over 100 officials, experts and grassroots instructors from the Ministry of Education, MOA, related research institutions and CABTS system attended the workshop.

The theme of this workshop was open learning and distance education, with five subjects attached to it, including open distance learning technologies and training and education of farmers, agricultural vocational education, agricultural information and agricultural distance education, on-line learning resource development and application, open distance learning support and quality assurance, integration of distance education with traditional agricultural education.

Mr. Liu Tianjin and Mr. Scott Reader respectively made keynote speeches on pro-farmer distance education -successes and epic task of agricultural distance education with Chinese features, and the History of farmers’ education in the US: the development of 100 years. Experts of ADEC presented in details distance education system, curriculum development and optimization of modules of the US, providing good practices and experiences for rural distance education in China to observe and learn. In association with the realistic background of rural distance education at present in China, scholars and grassroots instructors of China analyzed rural education and training system of China, curriculum development and the use of Internet technologies. Very useful recommendations were voiced. In-depth exchange was carried out between the two sides on issues of common interest.
